Retinols – The Science Behind the Beauty
Updated: Feb 25
We live in a busy world, that’s for sure. While we stare at our computer screens, binge on boxsets and batter ourselves outdoors with pollution and UVA/B rays, our skin takes the hit. It’s time to give it some love. Step forward, Retinols!
Taking it right back to basics, Retinols are essentially a form of Vitamin A and are excellent antioxidants. Of course, we can get our vitamin A from fruit and veg as Mother Nature intended, but sadly as the body uses it internally, there is often little left for the skin. That’s why we believe that you should use Retinol products to fight acne, stimulate collagen, promote call rejuvenation and smooth out wrinkles and lines.
At Imogen’s Laser Skin Clinic, clients who want to have the GlyoPro Facial and Hydra Radiance Peels will need to use our Glo Skin beauty product called Renew serum for two weeks prior to having the treatment. Renew is a Retinol based product that also contains Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. It smooths, draws out impurities, minimises the look of pores to give clearer and more refined skin. We recommend using the serum two to three times a week for two weeks, then solidly for a fortnight and then stopping it four days before your treatment. Some clients also like to have a couple of Flower Enzyme facials before starting the GlyPro and Hydra Radiance Peels as they also prep the skin.
However, it is important to understand any possible side effects and how to care for your skin whilst using Retinols. As with any beauty product, side-effects are always possible. Those sensitive to the ingredients may experience a brief sensation of warmth or stinging immediately after applying. Some people report some peeling, excessive dry skin, burning, stinging, redness, tingling, swelling, irritation, discolouration and itching. We advise to ALWAYS wear SPF like our Glo Beauty Oil Free SPF 40, even in winter to avoid developing pigmentation and chapping or burning. Better safe than sorry!
